Rising educators and teacher leaders joined PDK Director of Programs, Anne Morris, at a Sunday breakout session to learn about discussion strategies for the Kappan Monthly Discussion guides. These guides are available as a resource for Educators Rising members. Each month, articles are curated from the Kappan magazine especially for students and their chapters to use for exploring a variety of timely education topics.
Recent topics included the value of civics education, preventing online radicalization and extremism in boys, and rethinking school schedules. The resource includes a synopsis of the Kappan article, discussion questions for students, and links to more information on the topics.
Strategies like roundtables, discussion pairs, and short jigsaws were showcased as a way for students to reflect on topics with their peers as well as learning strategies they can facilitate in their future classrooms. Additionally, articles on how to approach and manage difficult conversations also were referenced. These monthly discussion guides are available in the Educators Rising Membership Portal under “Student Resources.”
